Second half fightback sends Fleet into Semi-Finals
A stirring second-half fightback saw Fleet come from three goals down to go through on penalties in a closely fought semi-final. Despite starting the better side missing a big chance, Fleet faded as Richmond hit their stride. A stunning Richmond goal opened the scoring after a swift switch of play cut Fleets defence apart, before a second was added with a fine strike from the edge of the box in off the post.
The second half was equally combative, with neither team able to assert control over a game that ebbed and flowed, but when Richmond fired in a third from a corner it looked game over. Fleet had other ideas, with a scrambled goal giving them a way back into the match. There was nothing scrambled about the second with a thunderous strike into the top corner. With momentum behind them, Fleet kept pushing and were rewarded five minutes from the end with a goal from a tight angle. The last five minutes were tense and nervous but with neither team able to make the break-through, dreaded penalties awaited.
Six of the penalties were fine composed finishes that gave the keepers no chance, but Richmond had one cannon back off the woodwork and another palmed away by the Fleet goalkeeper to send the team through.
